Current Research and Treatments Using Psychedelic Assisted Therapy Keren Tzarfaty, Ph.D, MFT / Executive director of MAPS Israel and the co-founder of the Hakomi Institute of Israel

This presentation aims to provide a deeper understanding of the therapeutic work with MDMA and psilocybin for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Both substances have shown promising results in alleviating symptoms and providing long-lasting benefits for individuals suffering from these mental health conditions.

The first part of the presentation will focus on MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD. Clinical studies show significant reductions in PTSD symptoms. The three-phase therapy, consisting of preparation, MDMA-assisted session, and integration, allows patients to explore and process their trauma in a controlled setting.
The second part of the presentation will explore psilocybin-assisted therapy for depression. Psilocybin, a naturally occurring psychedelic compound, induces altered states of consciousness and facilitates profound introspection. In a supportive environment, patients are able to explore their thoughts, emotions, and beliefs, leading to a shift in perspective and a deeper understanding of their depression. Clinical trials have shown significant reductions in depressive symptoms, even in treatment-resistant cases.

The Profound Effects of Child Sexual Abuse on Self-Perception and Personality Development, and the Art of Tailored Intervention Michael Salamon, Ph.D

More recent and advanced models in treating sexual abuse are moving away from the traditional approaches that focus on individual symptom management, but rather incorporate a multidimensional perspective and address the complex needs of survivors. While traditional approaches often focus on addressing immediate symptoms, advanced models recognize the long-term impact of sexual abuse on multiple domains, including self-perception, relationships, and overall well-being. They emphasize a holistic approach that incorporates trauma-informed therapies and an integrative approach to empowering survivors. This presentation will explore factors that influence the impact of child sexual abuse. Factors explored include the grooming process, age of the victim, nature of their relationship with the abuser, and a variety of other considerations. The discussion will also examine treatment modalities and ways in which clinicians may tailor treatment approaches. Through an exploration of these topics, attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of the complex dynamics of sexual abuse and the crucial role of customized therapeutic interventions in facilitating recovery.

Thriving in Relationships with ADHD: Unleashing the Potential of ADHD Couples with Breakthrough Attachment-Based Approaches Lisa Rabinowitz, MA

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) presents unique challenges for individuals, and when it becomes part of the couple dynamic, it creates explosive, lonely, and exhausting experiences. The dynamics within a couple are deeply influenced by attachment styles, necessitating the consideration of attachment styles within the context of ADHD. When couples have different attachment styles and ADHD is present in one or both individuals, the application of attachment theory can facilitate transformative healing that is more effective, supportive, and mindful.

In this presentation, the attendees will learn about the transformative power of attachment-based approaches when working with couples affected by ADHD. Three practical techniques rooted in attachment theory will be explored, which can significantly impact therapy and romantic relationships. Through the use of real-life examples, the attendees will gain valuable insights into ADHD relationships and discover how these skills enhance trust, communication, emotional regulation, and mutual understanding between partners. By the end of the session, the attendees will feel empowered with actionable skills that can be immediately applied in their own practice, fostering more harmonious relationships.

Shifting Perspectives and Strategies: An Integrated Approach to Suicide Prevention and Care Asher Siegelman, Ph.D

Despite over six decades of research and effort, global suicide rates have not decreased but have continued to rise, contrary to the declining trends in deaths from diseases like Influenza, HIV, and Tuberculosis. In Israel, a significant reduction in suicide rates has been achieved by limiting access to lethal means. However, the rate of suicide attempts requiring medical intervention has not changed, indicating that the underlying psychological pain still remain. There is a gap in the focus on intervention and assessment science, and more critically, the implementation of these methods. This presentation will therefore concentrate on practical, evidence-based approaches to suicide-focused intervention and assessment.

It will offer strategies for families and friends of those struggling with suicidal thoughts, and explain brief interventions for first responders and hospital settings with limited patient interaction times. The presentation aims to shift the perception of suicidality from an emergency response trigger to an understanding of deep suffering. Recognizing and appreciating evidence-based treatments for this suffering is crucial to avoid fear-based reactions. The presentation underscores the importance of each individual's role, whether they are laypersons, paraprofessionals, or experienced mental health clinicians, in actively reducing suffering and saving lives.

The Attuned Therapist: Inner integration allows for outer attunement Thomas Hübl, Ph.D

In this presentation, we will explore the power of attunement and how to cultivate a present inner state that allows for deep sensing of our clients. This is the basis to develop strong healing relationships that accelerate our clients' processing. Our nervous systems have an incredible power to synchronize with each other, especially applied in therapeutic and group settings. The therapist’s level of inner integration is key to being able to resonate deeply with and to be present with our clients. We will incorporate experiential practices that can help us to deepen our presence and attunement skills. We will dispel beliefs that get caught in hyper-individualistic views toward humans in order to make use of the healing power of inter-dependence and explore how individual integration and collective spaces amplify each other.

We will tie this in with the IAC-fluidity approach (Individual, Ancestral, and Collective trauma integration): Why trauma is not just an individual experience but a system that has a societal design dimension, and why does treating trauma often need to include the systemic level as well? Understanding and distinguishing between emergent and non-emergent processes in individuals, inter-generational and collective dynamics is crucial for thawing that which was frozen and promoting greater freedom, connectedness, creativity, and capacity for change. Broadening our awareness of trauma systems has a profound impact and represents the pinnacle of trauma integration work.
